WELCOME TO HOWLING HOUNDS COFFEE ROASTERS.
This is our story.
Howling Hounds Coffee Roasters is a micro-roastery based in Corvallis, Oregon, in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Originally founded in Benicia, California, Howling Hounds was established in 2016 by then-14 year old Reid Burford. A coffee enthusiast since the age of 12, when he first tasted his "first real cup of coffee", Reid began a tireless pursuit to learn more about the beans, their origins, and numerous flavor profiles. His passion soon expanded from making espresso and specialty drinks for family and friends to roasting his own small batches of green coffee beans.
The name, "Howling Hounds Coffee Roasters" was inspired by his two childhood dogs named Pepper and Basil, who often kept a watchful eye on his roasting activities in the early years of the business. "I love my two Basset Hounds. They are very quirky, but they are extremely sweet and loving, and their howls are especially unique. I thought ‘Howling Hounds’ would be a perfect name for my business because it is as unique as they are. "
A lot has changed since the founding of the company. Although Pepper and Basil haven’t been with us since 2018, their legacy lives on through our coffee each and every day. Since 2020, Reid has been a full-time student at Oregon State University, where Howling Hounds Coffee Roasters has received support from the InnovationX entrepreneurship program in Oregon State University’s College of Business.
Unlike many other small roasters, at Howling Hounds, your coffee is not roasted UNTIL you order from us.
We roast one batch at a time, so the bag of Howling Hounds Coffee that you have was roasted by itself, not with other batches. We do not believe in large-batch roasting or mass production, because it's nearly impossible to control the consistency and quality of the coffee beans when batches are several, maybe even hundreds of pounds instead of 1 or 2 pounds. Our "Roast to Order" method ensures that our customers experience their coffee at its peak of freshness and flavor. The fresher the beans, the better the taste.
We source our green beans from small green coffee distributors who source directly from coffee farms all over the world. We are continually learning and gathering information about our sources, so that we are confident the beans we choose will result in a final product whose quality and taste will exceed our customers expectations one cup at a time.
